Nung tumawag ako sa opisina
It's been a while since my last trip to the camp. the schedule's been erratic laletly and I couldn't take off from work that easy. Plus, Kelangan ko ng emotional and physical preparation...at umuulan araw-araw ng walang humpay ayokong magka-kachichas.I'm sure my dad understands. Bless his soul...
Anyway, to keep tabs on the process, I called the office to follow up on a document which is one of the many requirements of requirements of requirements to settle my dad's pension.Sus.
Mae dials: (ring) (ring) "Welcome to camp....(recorded spiel), please dial the local number ...."
So I dial that extension number.
"Thank you, goodbye".
10am and if i'm not mistaken, government offices open shop at 8am. Partida na ha. Binigyan ko na sila ng 2 hours to settle down. You know? Mag CR, magsuklay, mag powder, magpomada, magkape, chumika sa katabi etc. Siguro naman by this time game na diba? But no, I forgot that around this time they get their 15 min break. Yes, I know for a fact that government employees have "recess". Parang gradeschool diba? Anyway so I call the trunkline again and this time wait for a real person to answer.
Operator: "Camp aguinaldo"
Mae: "Good Morning!" (in my cheeriest and nicest but loud voice) I'tm trying to reach local ####
The ther line goes mute for a second then I hear ringing. She must've transerred me already. Baka naka-break din dapat sya, kaso tumawag ako. Sungit. hehe.
A woman answers the phone.
GE:"hellaw"
GE: "Anong i-i-inquire nyo?"
I tell her the document I needed. She asks me details of my father's service and we spend about a minute on how to spell his name.Mabuti nalang at kumain na ko.
GE: "walang Espinosa dito, baka Espina."
Without saying anything she leaves me on the phone for about 10 mins. She didn't hang up, I could hear people talking and shouting in the background. It's sounds like a marketplace. You hear two people conversing in the foreground, a couple of people shouting a few familiar jargons, phones ringing and being answered, and for some reason there was this constant sound in the background.Like a a bed of sound that didn't stop, not even to breathe. It went: "blah blah blah blah blah blah, lah lah lah lah lah lahlaaaahhh..." Sounded like a group of women chatting away like there was no tomorrow. Thank you, God, I'm only calling to follow up. Hindi ata ako prepared to face that battle right now.
She finally picks up the phone again, just when I was starting to think that she'd forgotten all about me and would start to ask the same questions all over again.
And mind you I am not softspoken.
Mae: " yes, mam!"
Naknampucha naman, sa tagal kong naka hold, that's all you have for me? It gets better.
Mae: "O sige mam. Ano pong number dun?"
GE:" dun sa finance"
Napakamot na ako ng ulo. Kaw naman kasi mae, dapat nga alam mo yung number dun eh.
Mae:"opo ano pong number?"
GE: " ####"
Cute.Nawala init ng ulo ko. :)

Take note, never ko binawi. Well of course, ngayon na may trabaho na sya siguro naman alam na nya ang totoo.
I wonder though, if I show this to her, could she fall for it again? hehehe.yes.I'm an evil big sister.

So on that very hot day I passed that sign that said would lead me to
"OTAG". Habang naglalakad iniisip ko, ano nga bang ibg sabihin nun.
Something about legal offices I guess. Yes, afford ko magmuni-muni dahil sa
laki ng kampo, I don't think I'll miss any significant landmarks. To my left: golf
course. To my right: golf course. In front of me... and endless road. But the
sign said "OTAG", and that's where I'm going. Though I don't know what
exactly I need to do there but sabi nga nila"I'll cross that bridge". After that
experience, I might have to change bridge, to maze.
Anyway!!!! Lakad lang mae, makakarating ka din. San nga ba ko pupunta?
Ah oo, OTAG. I was kind of feeling good about it already. Repeating it to
myself makes it sound familiar. I think it's the heat.
May nakita akong malaking building. The sign up front said: Office of the
Adjutant General. Ayun naman pala. I walked to the entrance. It looked
deserted save for the "receptionist". Joke lang. Mukhang sundalo sya pero
naka plain clothes. I know I'd look stupid asking but I did anyway.
Mae: "Sir, ito na po ba yung OTAG?"
Sir: "Hindi dito, dun pa." Points to what looked like infinity to me.
Eh. Papatulan ko ba to? Sige na nga.
Mae: "San ako dadaan sir? Dito ba?" I point to the sidewalk.
Sir: " Dun pa." Points to some vague buildings." Hindi itong building na to
ha?
I just give him a nod and said thanks, leaving him to think
that he was a big help.
Lakad pa, may dulo naman siguro tong kampo. If i hit a dead end, I must be
there. I passed several buildings and came to an intersection. AFP finance
center, said the big sign on one. Parang kailangan ko din ata pumunta dun
ah. Right! Sabi nung manong meron akong kukunin sa finance. But I really
need to go to OTAG first. Naka psych na ko for that eh. Someone in there
will surely give me directions. Besides, how far can it still be? I must've been
walking under the sun for about 20 minutes now.
No receptionist.
May isang tao
naka upo lang sa desk nya. Doing nothing really. He just had a piece of
paper in his hands but he wasn't reading it or writing anything on it. Baka
naman kakatapos lang nya. Anyway, alam ko pwede ko sya istorbohin at
taga-dito sya. He must know!
Mae: "excuse me sir, alam nyo po a kung san yung otag?"
Sir: " otag?bakit?"
Nagulat ako dun ah. I wasn't expecting him to question my mission. But I
showed him my documents anyway. I told him what I needed.
Sir:" Ah. Baba ka tapos labas ka dun". Points to somewhere. At this point I
didn't even bother to look.
I was going
to make this idiot proof. I'm tired. and hungry. and I smell.
Sir: " Hinde." He chuckles. Aba, loko to.
kabila"
Pucha. Ok, at least specific yung hagdan. May tao naman siguro dun.
Magtatanong na lang ako ulit.
Mae: "Salamat po!" I flash him a big fake smile.
Baba ako. Holy #$%^ batman! Andaming tao! Don't panic. Hindi pa naman
ito yun. I need to get out of this building right?I look around, reading the
multitude of signs. Window 1, Letter of introduction, lost and found, CR, Uy,
may information table. Yehey! Lapit ako sa 2 lalaking naka station dun. They didn't look like clerks to me. In fact, I think mga sundalo pero na assign sa information table. They don't look to happy, but I took a chance anyway.
Mae: " Sir san po ba yung otag? kelangan ko kasi kunin to" I show them my
documents.
Sir#1: "Dito.
Sir#2:" ano ba yan?" Looks at my papers "Ah hindi yan sa OTAG, Dyan yan
sa NRD."
Nooooooooooooo! All this walking and questions, tapos hindi pala dun? I'm starting to lose my patience.
Same directions. Iba lang yung title.
So I finally found my way out of that crowded buiding and there it was, staring
at me. The sign that read "NRD". Booyeah!
*to be continued ulit* ngawit na ko ulit.
"OTAG". Habang naglalakad iniisip ko, ano nga bang ibg sabihin nun.
Something about legal offices I guess. Yes, afford ko magmuni-muni dahil sa

"punta ka dun sa may mangga"
As most of you already know, my father recently passed away. Hence, I am helping my mom fix his pension and the requirements. Below is how I wouldv'e written it if I still kept a diary.
* this is for my relatives and friends only. Gusto ko lang ikwento personal experience ko.
Dear Diary,
I don't know how and where but I guess meron naman information booth dun somewhere. Duh, after all government office naman yun. Tsaka I'm sure may mapagtatanungan naman ako. Good luck to me! weeee!
mae
Dear Diary,
" ah sige mam, mag piso ride nalang kayo, dadaan yun".
"OK! salamat po!".
Piso ride pala ah. So I said to myself, kaya ko naman lakarin. Baka mauna pa ko. Fine.
I explained the situation then they pointed me to some window. OK, fine. Mukhang organized naman. So punta ako sa window. Di naman marami tao so nakikiramdam ako. I asked the lolo beside me,"may number po ba na tinatawag?" kasi dun sa ibang window meron eh. Sabi nya wala daw.
Sir:"Mam eto yung requirements. Eto( he starts highlighting stuff on the form) sa OTAG.
Mae: "san po yun?"
Sir: "Dyan sa OTAG" (points to his left)
Mae: (looks in the direction) " Dun po sa pinto na yun?" Malay ko ba.
Sir: " hinde dun sa GHQ" (sounds irritated) " tapos eto sa finance" I didn't dare ask any more til I was sure he was done. "Eto sa legal, ha" Looks at the documents i gave him then scratches his head. "e pano kaya to? nasa abroad pala si nanay?"
Mae: "Ay ewan ko po. pano nga ba?" hello. di ba dapat ako yung nagtanong nun?
Sir: "o sige basta kunin mo muna yang mga yan"
Mahaba pa yung usapan namin pero in essence hindi nya ma explain talaga sa kin kung ano yung procedure. basta lam nya, yun yung requirements. give up na ko. gutom na ako eh.
Mae: "sige sir, balik nalang ako with the requirements. san po ba yung finance at legal?"
Sir: " legal sa taas, dun yung elevator" Thank God. real directions. "yung legal malapit sa otag". (then starts to call another "customer"). Leaving me to contemplate on that last sentence. Am I supposed to know, by virtue of being my father's daughter, where and WTF otag and finance is? "this way to OTAG". Uy! Yun na yun. Might as well go there. Andito na rin lang ako.
